Sometimes you need a Do-Over!

Do OverOnce a long time ago, my son came up to me after something he had done (I don’t remember what it was exactly). He looked up at me and said, exasperated, “Mom… I just need a do-over!”

Those simple words have stuck with me ever since.

Because as much as I KNOW what I need to do to keep my relationship with my husband strong and healthy, living it out, in the flesh, day in and day out… well, that’s another story. And there are definitely times when I say or do things that are completely disrespectful, and I know it!

It’s times like these that I will go up to Pat and repeat my son’s words: “Hey… can I have a do-over?”

Something about those words softens his response and puts us in a position to work it out. When I say “I need a do-over” I am acknowledging that I made a mistake and I need his help making the situation right again. Then I can apologize and we can talk things out.

Because there is nothing worse than getting on the CRAZY CYCLE. I HATE THE CRAZY CYCLE! When I disrespect him, he gets unloving with me. And when he gets unloving with me, I get more disrespectful with him, and ’round and ’round it goes! CoupleFight

But we can combat this cycle with two things: a humble heart, and a few simple words.

I NEED A DO-OVER!

Our words with our spouses are SUPER important and can set the course for a whole marriage. So if there is a way to diffuse a situation or calm a storm before it blows up on us, by golly let’s start doing it!

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” -Ephesians 4:29
